It all started with a Lisa Frank notebook.
Candace Howze (she/her) is an American writer and multidisciplinary artist.
She nourished a passion for creative writing and documentary filmmaking as an undergrad. Her poetry and essays have appeared in The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, MTV News, Killens Review, Glass: A Journal of Poetry, CRWN magazine, and elsewhere.
Candace is the author of the poetry chapbook Letters About Losing You. She was a Full Frame Documentary Fellow in 2015 and named an Ella Fountain Pratt Emerging Artist by the Durham Arts Council in 2017. She is also a Watering Hole fellow, a Southern Esesu Endeavor fellow, and has received support from Frost Place, the Hurston Wright Foundation, Migrant Roots Media, North Carolina Asian Americans Together, and Amplified Voices.
In addition to writing, Candace has been selected to speak at several podcast conferences including PodThon, Podcast Movement Evolutions, and Podfest. Her podcast, Meraki Mentors, focuses on creating mentorship among female creatives.
Outside of the arts, Candace is passionate about racial liberation, reproductive justice, and educational equity. She has spoken on panels advocating for racial content warnings in children’s media, curated the Claim The Body exhibit at VAE Raleigh, advocated for the repeal of NC HB972, and presented a case study on college access at SXSW.
Candace is currently an MFA candidate at Warren Wilson College and associate fiction editor at Iron Horse Literary Review. An Ohio native, she resides in North Carolina with plans to see the world. You can find her on social media @aceisjoy.
